Canadian Study Permit

A Canadian study permit is necessary to study in Canada for foreign students who are not citizens or residents of Canada. It enables students to pursue their education at designated learning institutions i-e colleges & universities.
If you intend to study in Canada, you will require a valid Canadian Study Permit.
It’s crucial to be aware that if your studies don’t go well while you’re in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit,  it could have serious consequences for your immigration status.

Application Process Time

Depending on the circumstances of the case, it may take some time to get your Canadian Study Permit. The application process can take two weeks to sixteen weeks.
The amount of time required to receive a study permit depends on the volume of applicants, the location, and the type of the application.
You will be sent an official letter along with your decision. This typically takes six weeks if there is no change in the procedure. Additional six weeks may be required if more information is required.

Process For Study Permit Applications

The steps for application will include:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

First step you should do is to check your eligibility for a Canadian Study Permit. In order to meet the requirements, you must also have been accepted by a Canadian educational institution (DLI). Moreover, you must also attend school full-time and follow any rules outlined in your study permit, regardless of your age.

Step 2: Prepare Your Application

You need provide the following forms and documents in order to apply for a study permit:

  • Receipt of completed forms submitted to the Visa Office.
  • Letter of acceptance from previously attended educational institutes.
  • Evidence of money. (Funds in a bank account that is legally obtained or inherited)
  • Identification Document. (Government issued Id photo or a passport)
  • Also, you might be required to provide evidence of the educational institution’s address.
  • You will also require a letter of acceptance from the university you want to attend.

Step 3: Submit The Study Permit Application

Make sure you include all necessary forms and documents with your application when submitting.
Once you receive an email confirmation about application submission, so Congratulations. Now you can take a plane to Canada and continue your studies.

Permit Conditions :

There are specific rules and regulations that apply when you study in Canada. Respect them and keep the advantages of your experience.

  • Enroll at any designated learning institution (DLI).
  • Registration as either a full or part-time student in Quebec.
  • Only 150 days authorized leaves from your study program are allowed

Renew Your Study Permit

When To Extend Your Study Permit

Your study permit’s expiry date will indicate when you must stop studying and depart from Canada. The expiry date is located in the upper right corner on your permit. Typically, this date is the duration of your study program plus 90 days. You can use the extra 90 days to plan your departure from Canada or to extend your status as a visitor.

Cases to Extend Your Study Permit

Case 1

If you plan to continue your studies, you must renew your study permit. You must apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before your visa expires. Ensure that your passport does not expire at same time. Your study permit cannot be extended after the passport expiry date.

You can continue to live in Canada under the same conditions as your existing study permit until you receive a decision if you apply before your permit expires.

If you plan to travel outside Canada and your permit will expire while you are traveling, you should apply to extend it.

Case 2

If you complete your studies sooner than anticipated, your permit will end 90 days after the day you finish your studies, regardless of when the permit expires. The 90 days start:

  • On the day you receive the first notification from your school that you have finished your program through an email, letter, transcript, etc.
  • When you receive your certificate, diploma, or degree.

We must use the earliest issue date on the document if you cannot provide evidence of the date your school first informed you. This date might need to be confirmed with your school.
If you desire to continue your studies, you must apply for a study permit extension at least 30 days before it expires.

Case 3

If you complete your studies later than anticipated, you must try to renew your study permit at least 30 days before the original date expires.

What To Do If Your Permit Has Expired

You must be lost your status if you are still in Canada and:

  • Your permit’s expiry date passed before you had applied for
  1. A new study permit
  2. A work permit
  3. To stay in Canada as a visitor
  • You breached your permit’s conditions.


In particular circumstances, you could apply to regain your status as a student. Applicants must:

  • Submit your application within 90 days of losing your status.
  • Continue to fulfil the conditions for your stay.
  • Have fulfilled all the requirements mentioned in your permit.
  • Pay your fees.
  • Restoration ($200)
  • Study permit ($150)
